I had a bonus Soldiers Home moment at home today, miles and days away from Bingo. Not too long ago, careful readers might recall, Eileen from Activities had joked with me about renaming Home Bingo “Volunteer Extraordinaire Bingo.” At least, I figured it was a joke.

But then today, one of those particularly challenging days, I finally plopped on the couch and opened my new Soldiers Home calendar, which Eileen mails to me every month. I started circling my responsibilities and/or opportunities—and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, June 22 made me laugh out loud. And I really, really needed to laugh out loud.

Right there, in black and white, June 22's Home Bingo has been renamed.

I circled it. I guess I’d better show up.

My name is Sandy Deneau Dunham. I'm a journalist who’s worked at The Phoenix Gazette, The (Tacoma) News Tribune,  The Seattle Times, Town Hall Seattle and Pacific Lutheran University. I'm now back at The Seattle Times, as associate editor of its gorgeously glossy Pacific NW magazine. I've been a volunteer at the Washington Soldiers Home and Colony in Orting, Washington, since January 2009, and I am still a remedial videographer.
