I didn’t go to the Soldiers Home today, but I have updates, nonetheless.
Sad news: Since I’ve been volunteering at the Soldiers Home, I’ve been reading newspaper obituaries a little more regularly. And this week I was shocked to find a familiar name: Betty Levick, the sweet, dear wife of my good friend Ken Levick. As I’ve written, Ken visited Betty recently at a different nursing home and was shocked by her declining condition. Her service is scheduled for Wednesday, and so is Bingo, so I plan to take Ken a sympathy card, and a giant hug.
Happier news: Mike called today, and he was giddy. Someone had given him an entire bag full of big-band CDs to add to his collection. He couldn’t wait to listen to them, and to have me file them in his ever-expanding CD case. I was happy for him, but selfishly, not quite so giddy: I had just bought Mike a big-band CD for Christmas.
News of an elf-ish opportunity: One of my faithful blog readers (I think there are two) asked me whether and how the general public could contribute to the holidays at the Soldiers Home. I have thought of a particularly appropriate way, but it’d be a surprise for the residents, so I can’t describe it here in case even one resident is even an occasional blog reader. But if you e-mail me (sandydeneaudunham@gmail.com), we’ll work out the details—and a special holiday treat for some folks who really deserve all the happiness the season has to give.
