Trivia at the Soldiers Home has become a new (and enjoyable) pursuit for Mike and me—and apparently for about 10 or 12 other residents, too. Today, again, the room was packed, and I had a little trouble squeezing in.
I had a little trouble with today’s questions, too. But then Bob announced he had a “cooking” question, and one resident pointed and me and winked, as if he were saying, “There you go, Little Missy. One for the womenfolk!” I smiled back, but then let down all womankind when I realized I didn’t know the answer.
Bob’s question was something along the lines of, “If you are making a recipe with the following ingredients, which should you add first: butter, milk, wine, flour or salt?” (Honestly, I just made up half of those ingredients. I can’t remember exactly what they were, but that’s close.)
Almost simultaneously, Mike and I looked at each other and said something about how if you just drink the wine first, the order of the rest of the stuff doesn’t matter a bit. We laughed giddy little “great-minds-think-alike” laughs. But beyond that, I was stumped. And then Bob read the answer: “First, take the wine internally.” Ha! A trivia question-writer with a sense of humor.
Mike was giddy with other news, too. He no longer has pneumonia, and isn’t sure whether he ever really had it to begin with. He has gained some meaningful weight. And he has a new, upgraded CD player for his giant collection of what I seriously believe is nearly miraculously healing music.
After Trivia we went looking for Gary. (I still need to buy more of his amazing homemade planters.) No luck, even in the woodshop, but we did get Mike some fresh air, and it felt good to be outside after a rough round of questions.
I should add, though, that although I would have failed a real recipe question, I was the only one who correctly filled in this blank: “Name Pat Benatar’s big song, ‘Love is a ______.’ ” It’s battlefield. Battlefield. Hmm.Sounds like something a big, toughsoldier might have known.
