Thank You, Soldier

One of my friends posted this touching video on Facebook this morning. A couple notes on it:

1)    I would have cried even without the manipulative music. (Also, if I even mention the extra “the” in the narration, I am certain to make a typo myself in Karmic retaliation. So I won’t.)

2)    All sorts of people just like this—true American heroes who prompt spontaneous applause, handshakes, gratitude and tears in total strangers—live right here, in some cases totally alone, at the Soldiers Home … should you ever want to thank a soldier in person—and without a TSA pat-down.

My name is Sandy Deneau Dunham. I'm a journalist who’s worked at The Phoenix Gazette, The (Tacoma) News Tribune,  The Seattle Times, Town Hall Seattle and Pacific Lutheran University. I'm now back at The Seattle Times, as associate editor of its gorgeously glossy Pacific NW magazine. I've been a volunteer at the Washington Soldiers Home and Colony in Orting, Washington, since January 2009, and I am still a remedial videographer.
